CROWN PROSECUTION
At the High Court in Aberdeen today, Adrian Ruddock (DOB 04/01/73) was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment with a 3 year extended sentence, after being convicted of assault and rape under Section 1 of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009, which came into force on 1 December 2010. This is the first conviction in Scotland under Section 1 of this new legislation.

COPFS has today published a report on Conviction rates for rape charges in Scotland, 2008-2009. The report provides information on conviction rates for rape in cases reported to the Procurator Fiscal in the year 2008-09.

The Lord Advocate, the Right Honourable Frank Mulholland QC, has appointed Senior Advocate Depute Gillian Wade as the new head of the National Sexual Crimes Unit (NSCU), based at the Crown Office in Edinburgh.

At the High Court in Edinburgh Lord Pentland imposed an order for lifelong restriction on Kevin Mathers after he pled guilty to attempted rape in Edinburgh on 30 June 2010.

Ryan Yates, who was convicted of stabbing a grandmother in Aberdeen in attempt to abduct her two granddaughters has been banned from contacting another of his victims who he had sent threatening mail to from his cell in Peterhead prison. Prison staff were unable to censor mail he was sending because of his 'human rights'. It was revealed that as a result of this Yates sent abusive and threatening letters to a victim he assaulted when she was five years old. In the letter, sen in October 2010, Yates boasted about raping several children including a newborn baby. He was admonished because of his prison sentence but given a five year prevention order.

Glasgow’s specialist sexual assault referral centre Archway is facing a funding crisis. Archway, which is Scotland’s only 24 hour centre for rape victims provides support – emotionally and physically – for women who have been assaulted in the past seven days. It also has the capability to store DNA samples and other evidence collected if the victim has not decided to report the attack. The centre is facing problems as the number of victims increases as the funding decreases.

The locations of sex offenders in West Dumbartonshire are to be revealed following a four year battle by a housing authority. Scotland’s Information Commissioner has ruled that Strathclyde Police must reveal the number of sex offenders in each postcode. The ruling paves the way for the disclosure to be rolled out throughout Scotland.
